5 Questions for Beni Huggel, Sports Expert and Head of Administration, TAB in Aesch

Beni Huggel

The same job with the same employer for life: that was once the case. Today's careers are no longer linear and are characterized by new starts and lateral moves. It's not just ourselves and our priorities that are changing, but also the world of work itself. This month, our "5 Questions" were asked by someone who himself has had an eventful and very varied career: Beni Huggel, former soccer player for the national team and FC Basel 1893.

After his active career as a footballer, he trained as a football coach, works as an SRF football expert, passes on his experience from top-class sport in trainings, coachings and lectures and has been working as Head of Administration for TAB in Aesch for 1.5 years. In addition to all these activities, we were able to talk to Beni Huggel about his professional and personal highlights this year.

What has been the most positive thing for you professionally so far in 2017?

"This year I was able to consolidate my professional situation. Following on from my career to date, I am building up my further professional path at TAB in Aesch as Head of Administration. I am very pleased to be able to take on this responsibility.

In addition, I started an education in January (CAS Business Administration at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland) which is now slowly coming to an end. These two aspects are closely linked and professionally the most positive thing for me this year."

What new personal strengths have you discovered about yourself this year that have turned out to be very valuable professionally?

"I have discovered in myself a certain diplomatic tenacity. Whereby I must say that I have always been persistent, but now I am this in a diplomatic way. This year I realized that the combination of these two qualities is very fitting and is a necessary strength in my professional environment. Therefore, I have also consciously noticed this diplomatic side and worked on myself. I consider this a very important strength when dealing with employees, customers or suppliers."

Which headline surprised you the most in 2017?

"The various headlines surrounding Donald Trump's style of governing have taken me by surprise at times this year. But I wouldn't be me if this question didn't also remind me of surprising sporting headlines. "Nati qualifies for 2018 World Cup," "FCB's eighth championship title in a row" or "Two Grand Slam titles for Roger Federer" are some of these headlines that not only surprised me, but above all made me very happy."

What do you not want to read about, see or hear about in the media in 2018?

"What I don't want to read in 2018 is that the No Billag initiative had only the slightest chance of being accepted. I would rather hope that it was shot down and that we continue as before."

Are you in the habit of doing a personal year in review? If so, what tips do you have for self-reflection?

"Between Christmas and New Year's, I do that a lot. However, I don't write it down. I look back at my year and sometimes even consult my diary. Most of the time I scroll forward in my digital diary - but in this case I go back. May/June and November/December are the busiest months for me. But I don't just look back professionally, I also review extended weekends and vacations. This helps me to plan or skip something again in the new year.

1.5 years ago I did a personal coaching and there I created a personal guide. For a personal change and a healthy growth I do not respect the year change invented by humans as a decisive date to align one's goals. Therefore, I do not tie my goals to a specific year. You shouldn't wait for a specific date to make a resolution for yourself and give your life a new direction."
