Assessments - How to find the right employees

Man with magnifying glass

Nowadays, it is becoming increasingly difficult to fill vacancies properly. The really good candidates are rare and recruiters have to make a decision faster and faster. Nevertheless, an excellent application says little about how a person will perform in the workplace. That's why many companies use assessments as tools for selecting and evaluating candidates in recruiting and as a starting point for targeted personnel development.

These assessments can help with these difficult decisions by quickly bringing together meaningful information about the potential candidate and their behavior in the work context. Even if the procedure does not perfectly reflect reality, of course, the quality of the prediction is correspondingly high because qualified and experienced psychologists are used.

Recently, test procedures for personnel selection have also been increasingly used by recruiters. An assessment usually consists of various exercises, tests, role plays and selection interviews, which are held partly alone and partly in groups. Depending on the question, purely online-based tools are also used. With this multitude of procedures, it is a challenge to find the right tool for your own company.

At Batterman Consulting, we also use assessments on candidates to provide our clients with further information on shortlisted candidates. For 25 years, Thomas International tools such as the "Behavioral Profile Analysis" have provided us with detailed information about a person's self-image, behavioral preferences, strengths and limitations, communication style, value to the company, motivational reasons and behavior under pressure. In this way, we help our clients to discover the potential and the fit to the job requirements in new employees. In team analyses, we uncover current structures and help identify training needs. With this knowledge, employees can be proactively motivated, promoted and retained for the long term. With our assessment tools and certified consultants, we are able to analyze a candidate's behavioral, aptitude and ability profile, conduct evaluations and provide constructive feedback in consulting sessions.

The Thomas International assessments provide meaningful insights and give companies the knowledge they need to recruit and manage with more confidence. Thomas International offers six different assessments that serve different purposes.

Behavior: Personal Profile Analysis (PPA) provides quick and comprehensive insight into a person's behavioral preferences and communication style.

Personality in the workplace: The High Potential Trait Indicator (HPTI) is a workplace personality assessment based on the "Big 5" model that assesses traits that predict job success and derailment risks.

Skills: The General Intelligence Assessment (GIA) measures a person's aptitude in five key areas: Reasoning, Comprehension, Numeracy, Language Comprehension, and Spatial Awareness.

Emotional Intelligence: The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue) measures 15 emotional traits related to well-being, self-control, emotionality, and sociability.

360-degree feedback: Thomas 360 allows employees to quickly and easily gather performance feedback from their supervisors, peers, team members, and customers, and compare that feedback to their own performance perceptions.

Engage: Determine the level of engagement in your organization and identify measures to improve employee well-being, motivation and productivity.

Regardless of which test option you ultimately choose, it is important to find a method that measures the most important factors for the job you want to fill. In addition, you should make sure that a test is based on a recognized scientific foundation and has been tested on a relevant and comprehensive group of people. If you can find such a method that includes these characteristics and is tailored to the specific requirements, then you have a good chance of finding the right candidate for the job.
