AI Expertise on the Board of Directors and in Executive Management

8

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming the economy and also presenting new challenges for boards of directors. To make well-informed strategic decisions, technological expertise within leadership bodies is increasingly becoming a key factor for success.

The world is undergoing rapid digital transformation. Artificial intelligence (AI) has not only revolutionized the technology industry in recent years, but has also become a key factor in the success of nearly all economic sectors. Whether in process automation, data analysis, or the development of new business models—the possibilities are enormous. But what is the situation like in corporate boardrooms? Do we, as members of the board of directors, have the necessary AI expertise to make the right decisions?

Are we properly staffed?
Many boards of directors are composed of experienced executives who are experts in their fields. But today’s technological transformation demands more from us than just traditional management skills. AI is a specialized, constantly evolving field. Knowledge of machine learning, data-driven decision-making, and the ethical implications of these technologies is crucial for a company to remain competitive. If we do not sufficiently understand these topics, we may miss out on important opportunities or—even worse—make decisions that jeopardize the company in the long term.
This raises the question: Do we have the right expertise on the board of directors and within the company to fully harness the potential of AI? Do we have enough expertise to make the right strategic decisions regarding AI? And if not, what do we need to do to close this gap?

What to do when expertise is lacking?
If we lack the necessary AI expertise, we should not hesitate to take action. There are several ways in which we, as the Board of Directors and the Executive Board, can ensure that we are well-positioned in this critical area:

External advice and experts
One of the simplest and most effective ways to bring AI expertise into the team is to collaborate with external experts. This can take the form of consulting, workshops, or regular knowledge-sharing sessions. Experts can help us identify the potential of AI for our company and minimize risks.

Further education and training
Continuous professional development is a crucial component of a successful business strategy. If the board of directors lacks sufficient knowledge of AI, targeted training should be considered. This can be achieved through seminars and webinars, as well as by inviting experts to internal meetings.

New positions and competencies on the Board of Directors
A long-term solution could involve specifically appointing professionals with AI expertise to the board of directors and executive management, or bringing in external AI experts as consultants or in advisory roles. These experts could not only address the technical aspects but also tackle the ethical issues surrounding the use of AI in corporate strategy.

Building up internal expertise
A sustainable solution could involve building in-house expertise within the company. To this end, it would be advisable to establish an interdisciplinary team consisting of IT specialists, data analysts, and AI experts who work closely with the board of directors. The team can provide regular updates on new developments and opportunities in AI.

The question of whether our Board of Directors is appropriately composed is not just a matter of current expertise, but also of our willingness to continue developing and keeping pace with technological advances. AI is no longer a topic for the future—it is the topic of the present. Our company’s competitiveness and long-term sustainability depend largely on how well we understand this technology and integrate it into our strategic decisions.

It’s up to us to set the right course. If we realize that we still lack the necessary knowledge, then we should act now and take the right steps to ensure that we, as a leadership team, can make the most of the opportunities offered by AI.

Let’s think about this together: Do we have the right people in place, or do we need to better position ourselves for the future? Batterman Consulting is happy to offer its expertise when it comes to appointing professionals with AI expertise to the board of directors and within the company, or integrating external AI experts as consultants or in advisory roles.
