From a family business to an international service provider—and back to its roots again

2025 12 Dominic Small

As the son of a successful entrepreneur, I was practically born into the world of human resources and recruitment.

Even as a child, I was able to experience how varied, people-oriented, and dynamic this work is. My own career then began in my father's company, where I worked in payroll and looked after the candidates who had been placed.

Over time, I developed a desire to grow beyond my family environment and deepen my experience in an international setting. So I started my career at Hays, a global recruitment agency. I started small, learned a lot, and worked my way up to team leader over seven years. During this time, I had the opportunity to build up the life sciences team in Basel—a formative experience that showed me what is possible with commitment, curiosity, and perseverance.

After seven exciting years, it was clear to me that it was time to start a new chapter. I wanted to return to the world of SMEs, where proximity, responsibility, and creative freedom are even more noticeable. At Batterman Consulting Basel AG Today, I have the opportunity to experience this difference firsthand—together with colleagues who have found their passion in our industry. Here, I can not only contribute my knowledge, but also continue to learn every day.

Dominic Peter, Senior Consultant Life Sciences & Industry

Dominic, if you had taken a different path in your younger years, what would have become of you?

That's difficult to say. Looking back, it was clear to me early on that I would be fascinated by the world of recruitment. My father often took me to the office with him, where I was able to gain my first impressions, which shaped me during that time. So it was always clear to me that I would one day follow this path.

Becoming a professional soccer player was briefly a childhood dream—but unfortunately, I didn't have the talent to make it happen. That's why I enjoy going to the Joggeli stadium even more today to watch good games.

How do you prefer to start your day?

Since I'm not exactly a morning person, I keep my morning routine simple. I start the day with a cup of coffee at home, which is almost like a little ritual for me. Then I go straight to the office.

What does success mean to you personally?

For me, success means enjoying life, being grateful, living every moment consciously, and rejoicing in positive events. «Work hard & play hard» probably best describes my attitude.
It is important to me to be surrounded by inspiring role models and to work in an environment where you can constantly learn new things.

What would you work for free for a week?

I am happy to help my friends and acquaintances with any questions they may have about job applications, resumes, and preparing for interviews.
I also volunteer for Pro Juventute to help young people find a suitable apprenticeship.

What was the best career advice you ever received?

When I was a child, my father told me: «If you want to, you can achieve anything!» This simple sentence has stayed with me and shaped me to this day.

I am engaged and can look back on a successful career to date. I am full of enthusiasm as I look to the future and am excited about everything that lies ahead.
