Looking ahead

In the midst of global challenges, from the climate crisis to digitalization, Girsberger is optimistic about the future. "The furniture industry is not bedded in roses," the CEO points out, "but thanks to constant innovation and a commitment to quality and sustainability, we are optimistic about the future." Girsberger also relies on modern technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) to address challenges such as the recycling and reuse of furniture. AI could speed up the design process and help to effectively recycle unused furniture by generating new suggestions for use based on material properties. "There is no textbook for using AI in the furniture industry. Either you wait and maybe in a few years there will be a recommendation, or we commit now and take on a pioneering role." This attitude of the CEO underlines the commitment of Girsbergerto invest not only in the development of new products, but also in the sustainable use and reuse of existing resources.

Mr. Mastrodomenico, if you had taken a different path when you were younger, what would you have become?

"From a young age, I developed a strong interest in design, architecture, functions and cars. Even as a child, I was particularly fascinated by the design of furniture and cars. My first professional inclinations were aimed at car design. Studying or doing an internship in Turin at an Italian car dealership was one of my first concrete thoughts. Thanks to the opportunity to explore other professions and a sudden fascination for electrical engineering, I reoriented myself professionally. Looking back, I can imagine that I could have been drawn to two other career paths: the automotive industry, probably abroad, or the insurance and finance sector. In the end, things turned out the way they had to. I am very lucky to work every day in a professional environment that brings me a lot of joy and satisfaction. If I could choose again today, I would take exactly the same path again."

What is your favorite way to start your day?
"I like to be woken up in the morning by music in the background. I also really appreciate sitting at the morning table with my family and a cup of coffee before we all start our day. I use the commute to work as a leisurely start to the day. This period is often very fruitful and not yet so hectic, which gives me the opportunity to have it to myself. to develop new ideas and visions in peace."

What does success mean to you personally?
"Success is important to me because it creates moments of happiness for me and those around me. I always set myself specific goals for different situations that I want to achieve. However, my understanding of success has evolved and changed over time. While my personal success was the main focus when I was younger, I now also see my success in supporting other people and leading them to success through my actions and advice. It gives me great satisfaction when I see how my employees develop and experience success."

What would you work for free for a week?
"I love the exchange and collaboration with young people and talented people. At Girsberger, we have an average of ten apprentices in the commercial and carpentry trades, and we train at least one apprentice per area in each year of training. I always want to convey that, regardless of where you start in life and training, there are no limits to the top. With the right motivation and conviction, everyone can achieve their goals.

We regularly bring students from universities of applied sciences to Bützberg to give them an insight into the industry through workshops and practical experience. I am very happy to take advantage of these times of collaboration and personal commitment, deliberately foregoing fees and compensation and allowing these to flow into the coffers of the respective project. In return, I gain a lot of valuable experience and input. I would therefore like to be able to spend a whole week working with young people in this context."

What was the best professional advice you ever received?
"In my younger years, I was often a lone wolf in my work and liked to take on big challenges on my own. Once, when I was preparing for a big competition and a presentation, my line manager at the time asked me if he could accompany and support me on this important date. At first, I didn't understand his intention and declined. But his valuable words and the experience that followed brought me an important realization: you can be very strong on your own, but together you can become unbeatable."

We would like to thank Mr. Mastrodomenico for his contribution to this article.
